Questions about the Pre-Order Process
When will this ship? +
The current expected shipping window is mid-to-late July. This depends on ASA’s release timeline and when inventory arrives to us. If the book arrives later than expected, pre-tabbed orders will ship after inventory is received and tabbing is completed.
Will I be charged now or when it ships? +
Yes, payment is collected when you place your preorder. Your order will ship later, after the 2027 ASA FAR/AIM inventory arrives and tabbing is completed.
Is this available for immediate shipment? +
No. This is a pre-order item and will not ship immediately.
What happens if my order includes other items? +
Orders containing this pre-order item will ship together once the 2027 FAR/AIM is ready.
Does free shipping still apply if I add other products to my preorder? +
Free ground shipping is included on the 2027 FAR/AIM preorder item itself. If your cart also includes in-stock products, standard shipping rates may still apply to those items unless the full order qualifies for free shipping at $110+.
Preorder items and in-stock items may appear in the same cart, but orders containing a preorder item will ship together by default. In other words, if your order includes both preorder and in-stock items, the entire order will ship after the preorder inventory is received, tabbed, and prepared for shipment.
Is expedited shipping available for this item? +
No. Expedited shipping is not available for this pre-order item.
Because the 2027 ASA FAR/AIM has not arrived yet, we cannot guarantee a specific ship date. All pre-orders will ship in the order they are received after inventory arrives and tabbing is completed.
What happens if ASA’s release is delayed? +
The current expected shipping window is mid-to-late July, but that depends on ASA’s release and inventory arrival timeline. If the books arrive later than expected, preorder shipments will begin after inventory is received and tabbing is completed.
Will I receive tracking? +
Yes. Tracking will be emailed once your order ships.

Each Pre-Tabbed FAR/AIM is organized around a specific certificate or rating. Select the version you’re considering to see common questions before you order.
Common questions
Private Pilot FAQs
Use this version if you are training for your Private Pilot certificate and want the FAR/AIM organized around the sections most relevant to that checkride.
Is this the right version if I’m just starting flight training?
Yes. The Private Pilot version is intended for student pilots working toward the Private Pilot certificate. It highlights commonly referenced regulations and AIM sections for private pilot training and checkride preparation.
Should I choose Private Pilot or the Private + Instrument Combo?
If you are focused only on the Private Pilot checkride right now, the Private Pilot version is the cleanest choice. If you know you will continue into instrument training soon, the Private + Instrument Combo may save you from buying another copy later.
Does this include everything I need for the private pilot checkride?
It is a tabbed FAR/AIM reference, not a complete ground school course. It helps you quickly find important FAA regulations and AIM sections, but it should be used alongside your training materials, ACS, instructor guidance, and checkride prep resources.
Is this useful before I start ground school?
Yes. Many students use it early so they can become familiar with the FAR/AIM before they are expected to reference it during training.
What exactly is tabbed out?
The tabs are organized around regulations that are commonly emphasized during training and checkride preparation for each certificate or rating. We focus heavily on high-use material from Parts 61, 91, and the AIM, while avoiding unnecessary over-tabbing that can make the book harder to use. NorthstarVFR does not comprehensively tab every possible regulation that could be discussed, tested, or asked about. The goal is to make the FAR/AIM easier to navigate while keeping the layout clean and practical.
How many tabs are in this book?
50. That does not mean only 50 regulations are tabbed. Many tabs actually contain groups of regulations found nearby one another so as not to crowd the book.
Common questions
Instrument Rating FAQs
Use this version if you are adding an Instrument Rating and want IFR-specific regulations and AIM sections easier to find during training.
Should I buy this if I already own the Private Pilot version?
If your current FAR/AIM is from a prior year or you want the IFR-focused tab layout, the Instrument Rating version is the better fit for instrument training.
Does this include IFR-specific sections?
Yes. This version is organized around sections commonly used by instrument students, including IFR-related regulations and AIM guidance.
Is this useful for instrument ground school?
Yes. It is especially useful when your course, instructor, or written-test prep references specific FAA regulations or AIM sections.
Should I choose Instrument only or the Private + Instrument Combo?
If you already completed Private Pilot and only need instrument guidance, choose Instrument Rating. If you are still in private training and plan to continue into instrument training soon, the combo may be the better long-term choice.

Common questions
Commercial Pilot FAQs
Use this version if you are training for your Commercial Pilot certificate and want the FAR/AIM organized around commercial-level privileges, limitations, and operating rules.
What makes the Commercial version different?
The Commercial version is focused on the regulations and AIM sections commercial students are more likely to reference during training and checkride preparation.
Should I get Commercial only or the Private + Instrument + Commercial Combo?
If you only need the Commercial Pilot stage, choose Commercial. If you want one broader tabbed reference covering private, instrument, and commercial training, choose the full training combo.
Is this useful if I already have an older FAR/AIM?
Yes, especially if your current copy is outdated or not organized for commercial training. The FAR/AIM is updated annually, so many pilots prefer using the current edition during checkride prep.
Does this replace commercial ground school?
No. This is an organized FAA reference book. It supports your training, but it does not replace ground instruction, the ACS, or a full commercial pilot study course.

Does this book include tabs for Parts 135 or 121?
No. ASA’s standard FAR/AIM does not include Parts 121 or 135. Those regulations are found in other reference materials, such as ASA’s FAR-FC. NorthstarVFR currently focuses on FAR/AIM products and does not currently offer a tabbed FAR-FC.
Common questions
Private + Instrument Combo FAQs
Use this combo if you are working on Private Pilot now and expect to continue into Instrument Rating training soon.
Who is this combo best for?
This combo is best for students who want one FAR/AIM organized for both Private Pilot and Instrument Rating training.
Is this too much for a brand-new student pilot?
Not necessarily. It includes more tabs than the Private Pilot version, but it can be useful if you already know instrument training is part of your near-term plan.
Why buy the combo instead of Private Pilot only?
The main reason is continuity. If you expect to move into instrument training soon, the combo gives you a broader reference without buying a second tabbed FAR/AIM later.
Does this include both private and instrument-focused tabs?
Yes. The combo is organized to support both stages of training in one book.
Won't this book be too cluttered and confusing?
No! The tabs are color coded by rating: Blue for private pilot (general) knowledge and red for instrument specifics.

Common questions
Private + Instrument + Commercial Combo FAQs
Use this combo if you want one training-focused FAR/AIM covering the major stages from Private Pilot through Commercial Pilot.
Who is this version best for?
This version is best for career-track students or motivated pilots who expect to continue through private, instrument, and commercial training.
Is this the most comprehensive student-pilot option?
Yes. For non-instructor training, this is the broadest student-focused Pre-Tabbed FAR/AIM option.
Is this overkill if I’m only working on Private Pilot?
It may be more than you need if you are only focused on Private Pilot. But if you already know you will continue into Instrument and Commercial training, it can make sense. However, consider your training timeline. If you expect that getting from private through commercial will take over a year, it may be best to wait to get other training material beyond private pilot. The FAR/AIM is an annual release.
How many tabs are in this book?
75. That does not mean only 75 regulations are tabbed. Many tabs actually contain groups of regulations found nearby one another so as not to crowd the book.

Common questions
CFI FAQs
Use this version if you are preparing for initial CFI and want an instructor-focused FAR/AIM reference.
Is this version only for initial CFI applicants?
It is primarily built for initial CFI preparation, but it can also be useful for active instructors who want a more organized FAR/AIM reference.
Does this include FOI-related sections?
This version is organized with instructor applicants in mind, including commonly referenced instructor-related regulations and guidance.
Should I choose CFI or CFI + CFII?
If you are only preparing for initial CFI, choose CFI. If you plan to add CFII soon or want one broader instructor reference, choose the CFI + CFII combo.
Is this useful for lesson plan prep?
Yes. It can help you quickly locate regulations and AIM sections that commonly come up while preparing lessons, endorsements, and checkride explanations.
Does this include tabs for other ratings?
This book contains CFI specific tabs as well as private/general pilot material to help you teach future private pilot students. No sport, instrument or commercial specific regs are included.

Common questions
CFI + CFII Combo FAQs

Who is this combo best for?
This combo is best for instructor applicants who plan to pursue both CFI and CFII, or instructors who want one broader reference for private, instrument and commercial student training. Sport tabs not included.
Is this different from the regular CFI version?
Yes. The CFI + CFII combo is built to cover a broader instructor use case, including instrument-instructor preparation. This book also contains tabs for students studying private, instrument and commercial. Sport tabs not included.
Should I buy this if I’m only doing initial CFI?
We highly recommend this combo version as it encompasses all material from private, instrument, commercial, CFI and CFII. Its meant to help you not only become a CFII but also to help you instruct all future students. Sport tabs not included.
Is this the broadest instructor option?
Yes. This is the most comprehensive instructor-focused Pre-Tabbed FAR/AIM option. This item contains tabs for private pilot, instrument pilot, commercial pilot as well as CFI. Sport tabs not included.
How many tabs are included? Won't that be confusing/overwhelming?
100 tabs. That does not mean only 100 regulations are tabbed. Many tabs actually contain groups of regulations found nearby one another so as not to crowd the book.
Each rating from private through CFII has its own color so you won't get confused.
Does this book contain parts 135 or 121?
Sport Pilot FAQs
Use this version if you are training for your Sport Pilot certificate and want the FAR/AIM organized around the sections most relevant to that checkride.
Is this the right version if I’m just starting Sport flight training?
Yes. The Sport Pilot version is intended for student pilots working toward the Sport Pilot certificate. It highlights commonly referenced regulations and AIM sections for sport pilot training and checkride preparation.
Does the Sport Pilot version include the new MOSAIC sport pilot rule changes?
Yes. The Sport Pilot version is built around the updated post-MOSAIC sport pilot regulations, including the expanded aircraft eligibility rules, updated operating limitations, and related Part 61 sport pilot provisions.
For example, MOSAIC changed the aircraft limitations for sport pilot operations by moving away from the old weight-based light-sport aircraft limits and expanding the types of aircraft a sport pilot may be able to operate, subject to the applicable performance, endorsement, and operating requirements.
This is not a tab for every possible regulation affected by MOSAIC. It is designed to make the sport-pilot-specific regulations and commonly referenced sections easier to find.
How many tabs are in this book and what is tabbed out?
The 50 tabs are organized around Part 61 and Part 91 regulations and AIM sections commonly referenced during sport pilot training and checkride preparation. The goal is to make the FAR/AIM easier to navigate without over-tabbing the book.
NorthstarVFR does not comprehensively tab every possible regulation that could be discussed, tested, or asked about. The Sport Pilot version is designed to keep the layout practical, focused, and easy to use.
Just because this book has 50 tabs does not mean only 50 regulations are tabbed out. Many of the tabs contain 2 or more regulations in order to keep the book from becoming too cluttered.
Should I choose Sport Pilot or Private Pilot?
Choose Sport Pilot if you are specifically training for a sport pilot certificate.
Choose Private Pilot if you are training for a private pilot certificate or expect your training to move beyond sport pilot privileges soon.
The Sport Pilot version is focused on sport pilot-specific rules. The Private Pilot version is organized around private pilot training and checkride preparation. Sport Pilot certificates are not a prerequisite for Private Pilot training.
Does this replace ground school or sport pilot training materials?
No. This is a pre-tabbed FAA reference book. It helps you find important FAR/AIM sections more quickly, but it does not replace ground school, instructor guidance, the ACS, or a complete sport pilot course.
Use it as a reference alongside your training materials.
