Whether you're a brand-new student pilot chasing your Private Pilot License, or you're deep into Instrument or Commercial training, one question follows you to every airplane you'll ever fly: is this thing legal to leave the ground today? In other words: is this airplane airworthy? You can be the smoothest stick-and-rudder pilot on the ramp, but if the aircraft is out of inspection, you're grounded — and on your checkride, a Designated Pilot Examiner will ask you to prove you know the difference.
That's what the AAV1ATES mnemonic is for. It's a memory aid that walks you through every inspection and check an airplane needs to be airworthy. You'll also hear it as AV1ATES — the shorter version leaves off the Airworthiness Directives up front. We're going to include them, because they matter.
The Letters, Decoded
- A — Airworthiness Directives (ADs). Mandatory fixes the FAA issues for known safety problems on a specific aircraft, engine, or part.
- A — Annual Inspection. A top-to-bottom inspection, every 12 calendar months (FAR 91.409(a)).
- V — VOR Check. A navigation accuracy check, within the preceding 30 days — but only if you're flying IFR using VOR (FAR 91.171).
- 1 — 100-Hour Inspection. Required every 100 hours of time in service — but only for airplanes flown for hire or used for flight instruction for hire (FAR 91.409(b)).
- A — Altimeter & Pitot-Static System. Tested every 24 calendar months for IFR flight in controlled airspace (FAR 91.411).
- T — Transponder. Tested and inspected every 24 calendar months (FAR 91.413).
- E — ELT. The Emergency Locator Transmitter, inspected every 12 calendar months (FAR 91.207).
- S — Static System. Part of that same 24-month check under FAR 91.411 — which is why "altimeter and static" usually get said together.
The Part Students Miss: Not Every Item Applies to Every Flight
Here's the trap. New students memorize all eight letters and assume the airplane needs every single one signed off before any flight. Not true. Some are always required; some only kick in when you file IFR; and a couple depend on how the airplane is being used. Sorting these out is exactly the reasoning a DPE wants to hear.
Required for every flight — VFR or IFR:
- Airworthiness Directives — compliance is mandatory anytime you operate the aircraft, period (FAR 91.403(a), 14 CFR Part 39.7). There's no "VFR exemption" for a safety directive.
- Annual Inspection — no valid annual, no flying, full stop.
- ELT — must be installed and inspected for essentially all general aviation flying (a few narrow exceptions exist).
Required only when you fly IFR:
- VOR Check — you only need this if you'll navigate by VOR under IFR. A student pilot practicing VFR pattern work never has to touch it.
- Altimeter & Pitot-Static System — the 24-month test under 91.411 is an IFR-in-controlled-airspace requirement.
- Static System — same rule, same reason.
Depends on the situation:
- 100-Hour Inspection — this one isn't about IFR at all. It's required only when the aircraft is carrying passengers for hire or used for flight instruction for hire — which is why your rented trainer at the flight school lives on a 100-hour cycle, but a privately owned airplane flown for personal fun does not.
- Transponder — the 24-month test applies whenever the transponder is used, and a working transponder is required in a lot of today's airspace (Class A, B, and C, above 10,000 feet MSL, and inside the Mode C veil around the busiest airports) — VFR or IFR alike. So it's less an "IFR item" and more an "airspace item."
See the pattern? The airplane you rent for a sunny VFR solo needs its ADs, annual, ELT, and — depending on where you fly — a current transponder. Add clouds and an IFR flight plan, and now the VOR, altimeter, and static checks come into play too.
The One Check You Can Do Yourself: The VOR
Almost every item on this list gets handled by a mechanic or a repair station. The VOR check is the exception — the pilot can perform it, and DPEs love asking about it. There are several legal methods, each with its own tolerance:
- VOT (VOR test facility) or a repair-station test signal: within ±4°
- Ground checkpoint on the airport surface: within ±4°
- Airborne checkpoint designated by the FAA: within ±6°
- Dual VOR cross-check (tune both radios to the same station and compare): within 4° of each other
- Airway centerline check over a known point 20+ NM out: within ±6°
Whichever you use, log it: date, place, bearing error, and your signature. No entry, no legal VOR for IFR.
Why Airworthiness Directives Deserve Their Spot
It's easy to treat ADs as invisible paperwork, but they're the FAA's direct response to real accidents and failures — a cracked component discovered on one airplane in the fleet becomes a mandatory inspection or fix for every airplane like it. As pilot in command, you're not expected to perform the AD work, but you are responsible for making sure it's been done before you fly. That's why FAR 91.403(a) puts the duty for airworthiness — including AD compliance — squarely on the owner and operator, and why a sharp examiner will ask how you'd confirm the ADs are current on a rental. The answer: they're documented in the maintenance records, and knowing how to find them is a real pilot skill.
Putting It Together
Imagine you're pre-flighting a rented Cessna 172 for a solo cross-country on a clear VFR day. Walk AAV1ATES in your head: the ADs and annual are in the logbooks, the ELT inspection is current, and since you'll transit a Class C airport, your transponder test needs to be good. The VOR, altimeter, and static checks? Not required today — you're VFR. Now imagine the same flight next month, IFR, in the clouds. Suddenly those three matter, and you'd better be able to say so out loud. Being able to open the aircraft records and find each entry is a different skill than reciting the letters — practice both.
