ATOMATOFLAMES Explained: Day VFR Required Equipment (FAR 91.205)

Every student pilot meets ATOMATOFLAMES eventually — usually right before wondering what tomatoes have to do with flying. It's the memory aid for the day-VFR equipment list in FAR 91.205, and once you understand why each item is on it, it sticks for good. Here's the mnemonic decoded, the regulation behind it, and the aircraft-specific rules that can require even more than the list shows.

ATOMATOFLAMES Explained: Day VFR Required Equipment (FAR 91.205)

Sooner or later, every student pilot bumps into a word that looks like a typo and sounds like a kitchen accident: ATOMATOFLAMES. Your instructor drops it during a preflight briefing, you nod like you understand, and then you spend the drive home wondering what tomatoes have to do with flying.

Here's the good news: it's one of the most useful mnemonics in all of aviation, and once you understand why each item is on the list, it sticks for good. This one is aimed at Private Pilot students, but the underlying regulation follows you all the way to the airlines, so learning it properly now pays off later.

Where This Comes From

ATOMATOFLAMES is a memory aid for the equipment you're required to have for day VFR flight under 14 CFR 91.205b.

Two things worth pinning down before we decode it:

  • 91.205 applies to powered civil aircraft with a standard U.S. airworthiness certificate. If you ever transition to a light-sport or experimental aircraft, the required-equipment picture changes, so don't assume this list transfers everywhere.
  • The general rule in 91.205(a) says the equipment must be installed and in operable condition. A required instrument that's in the panel but broken doesn't count as "having" it. Hold that thought — it matters more than students expect.

The Mnemonic, Decoded

Each letter maps to a required item. Here's the full breakdown:

  • A — Airspeed indicator
  • T — Tachometer (for each engine)
  • O — Oil pressure gauge (for each engine using a pressure system)
  • M — Manifold pressure gauge (for each altitude engine)
  • A — Altimeter
  • T — Temperature gauge (for each liquid-cooled engine)
  • O — Oil temperature gauge (for each air-cooled engine)
  • F — Fuel gauge (indicating the quantity in each tank)
  • L — Landing gear position indicator (if the aircraft has retractable gear)
  • A — Anticollision lights
  • M — Magnetic direction indicator (your compass)
  • E — Emergency locator transmitter (ELT)
  • S — Safety belts


The "Why" Behind the List

Notice the theme: this list is built around the information you absolutely need to fly and keep the engine alive. Airspeed, altitude, and heading are your core flight references. The tachometer, oil pressure, oil temperature, and fuel gauges are your window into the health of the engine and how much time you have left in the air. The compass is your last-resort heading source if everything electric quits.

The list is also written to match the airplane in front of you, which is why so many items carry qualifiers.

Picture your typical trainer — a Cessna 172 or Piper Cherokee with a normally aspirated, air-cooled engine. That airplane needs an oil temperature gauge (air-cooled) but not a liquid-cooled temperature gauge, and it won't need a manifold pressure gauge unless it has an altitude engine (think turbocharged or supercharged). It has no retractable gear, so no landing gear position indicator is required. The regulation isn't demanding every gauge on every airplane — it's demanding the gauges that your airplane's design calls for.

Above and Beyond the Regs

Here's the part a lot of students miss: 91.205 is a floor, not a ceiling. Your specific aircraft can require more than the mnemonic lists, and you're responsible for knowing it.

Where does the "extra" come from?

  • The POH/AFM equipment list and Kinds of Operations Equipment List (KOEL). Your aircraft's approved flight manual can require equipment for a given operation that 91.205 never mentions.
  • The Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS). The airplane was certificated with certain equipment as a condition of airworthiness.
  • Airworthiness Directives (ADs) and STCs. These can add required equipment or operating limitations specific to your tail number.

And when something on the list is inoperative, that's not automatically a no-go. 14 CFR 91.213 governs what you can do — either under an approved Minimum Equipment List (MEL), or, for many light aircraft without an MEL, by determining the item isn't required and then placarding and either deactivating or removing it. This is exactly why "installed and operable" from 91.205(a) matters. A dead gauge you need grounds the airplane until it's addressed.

Student-Pilot Nuances Worth Knowing

A few things that trip people up on the ground and on the checkride:

  • The mnemonic isn't the whole regulation. 91.205(b) also addresses items ATOMATOFLAMES leaves out — like flotation gear when operating for hire over water beyond gliding distance from shore, and shoulder harnesses on many aircraft based on manufacture date. The mnemonic gets you 90% there; the book gets you 100%.
  • "Anticollision lights" is a required item, but the requirement is tied to airplanes certificated after a specific date — small civil airplanes certificated after March 11, 1996 under Part 23. An older trainer may not be captured by that exact requirement, yet it's still on your mnemonic — know the distinction.
  • The ELT is required "if required by 91.207." It's not an unconditional item, which is a favorite examiner "gotcha."
  • Read the qualifiers literally. "For each engine," "for each tank," "if the aircraft has retractable gear" — these words are doing real work. A DPE loves asking why your single, fixed-gear trainer doesn't need a gear-position indicator.

On Your Checkride

Expect your examiner to hand you the regulation and ask you to figure out whether the airplane is legal for the flight — this lands squarely in the Airworthiness Requirements task of the Preflight Preparation area of the Private Pilot ACS. The strongest answer isn't reciting the mnemonic — it's showing you can go from the mnemonic to the actual reg and then to this airplane's documents.

Do that, and "is this aircraft legal to fly today?" becomes a question you can answer with confidence instead of a shrug.
