FLAPS Explained: Night VFR Required Equipment (FAR 91.205)

There's nothing like your first night flight — smooth air, quiet radios, runway lights like stars. Night VFR comes with its own required-equipment list, and the mnemonic is FLAPS. But here's the catch that trips up nearly every student: FLAPS isn't the whole list. It's what you add on top of your day-VFR equipment. Here's FLAPS decoded, the regulation behind it, and the three definitions of "night" that love to show up on checkrides.

FLAPS Explained: Night VFR Required Equipment (FAR 91.205)

There's nothing quite like your first night flight. The air goes smooth, the radios go quiet, and the runway lights stretch out ahead of you like a runway made of stars. It's one of the most memorable parts of Private Pilot training — and it comes with its own short list of required equipment that you'll need to know cold.

That list lives in the mnemonic FLAPS. Here's the catch that trips up almost every student: FLAPS is not the whole night equipment list. It's the additional gear you need on top of everything you already carry during the day. So before we decode it, let's nail down where it fits.

Night VFR = Day VFR + FLAPS

The night-VFR equipment requirements are in 14 CFR 91.205(c). And the very first item in that paragraph — 91.205(c)(1) — says you need everything required for day VFR in 91.205(b). That's your ATOMATOFLAMES list (see the blog posted just previous to this one).

In other words:

Night VFR required equipment = ATOMATOFLAMES + FLAPS.

If someone asks you "what do you need for night?" and you only rattle off FLAPS, you've just told them your airplane can fly at night without an altimeter or a compass. Always start from the day list and add the night items.

The Mnemonic, Decoded

FLAPS covers the five items 91.205(c) adds for night flight:

  • F — Fuses. One spare set of fuses, or three spare fuses of each kind required, accessible to the pilot in flight.
  • L — Landing light. Required only if the aircraft is operated for hire.
  • A — Anticollision lights. An approved aviation red or aviation white anticollision light system.
  • P — Position lights. Your red, green, and white navigation lights.
  • S — Source of electrical energy. An adequate source for all installed electrical and radio equipment.

The "Why" Behind the List

Every item on FLAPS exists because night removes your margin for error. During the day, an electrical hiccup is an inconvenience. At night, the same failure can leave you without lights, radios, and instruments in a black sky.

Look at the theme:

  • Position and anticollision lights are how other traffic sees you when your airplane is otherwise invisible.
  • A source of electrical energy — read that as a working alternator or generator, not just a battery — keeps those lights and your radios alive. A battery alone is a countdown timer, not a power source.
  • Spare fuses exist so a blown fuse in cruise doesn't permanently kill a system you can't do without in the dark.
  • The landing light gives you a fighting chance to judge your flare and spot obstacles on an unfamiliar runway.

Picture the scenario the rule is built around: you're 20 miles out on a night cross-country and your alternator quits. Your battery is now the only thing powering your radios, transponder, and lights — and it won't last long. That's exactly why "adequate source of electrical energy" made the list, and why a good pilot treats it as a real emergency, not a footnote.

The Nuance That Catches Everyone: What "Night" Even Means

Here's a favorite examiner trap. Aviation actually uses three different definitions of "night," and they don't line up:

  • Position lights (91.209): required from sunset to sunrise — the widest window. 
  • Required equipment and logging night flight (14 CFR 1.1): "night" is the time between the end of evening civil twilight and the beginning of morning civil twilight.
  • Night passenger currency (61.57): measured from 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise — the narrowest window.

So your position lights must be on before it's legally "night," and your night passenger currency doesn't even start counting until an hour after sunset. Same word, three meanings. Knowing the difference is the mark of a sharp student.

Above and Beyond the Regs

As always, 91.205 is the floor. Your specific airplane can demand more:

  • The POH/AFM and Kinds of Operations Equipment List (KOEL) may require equipment for night flight that the FAR never mentions — interior lighting, certain avionics, and often a landing light regardless of the "for hire" wording.
  • Common sense and good practice go beyond the reg, too. Launching into a night flight with an inoperative landing light might be legal in a personal airplane, but landing on a dark, unfamiliar runway without one is a gamble no seasoned pilot takes lightly.
  • Inoperative equipment is still governed by 14 CFR 91.213. A required night item that's dead grounds the flight until it's addressed under an MEL or the placard-and-deactivate process.

Student-Pilot Nuances Worth Knowing

  • The landing light is only required "for hire." A student renting an airplane to fly themselves generally isn't operating "for hire," so it's not strictly required — but you should never treat a night flight as a good time to go without one.
  • Spare fuses only matter if your airplane uses fuses. Many modern trainers use circuit breakers instead. If there are no fuses "required," there are none to carry a spare set of — but you're expected to know why.
  • Anticollision lights aren't just a night item. Under 91.209, if your aircraft is equipped with an anticollision light system, it must be on for all operations — day and night — though the PIC may turn them off when it's safer (for example, in cloud, where strobe flashes cause disorientation).

On Your Checkride

Your examiner will want to see that you can go from the mnemonic to the actual regulation and reason about your airplane's equipment. Being able to flip straight to 91.205 and 91.209 in a Pre-Tabbed FAR/AIM turns a stressful oral moment into a confident one. The Takeaway

FLAPS is the night add-on to the day-VFR list — never the whole story. Learn it as ATOMATOFLAMES + FLAPS, understand that each night item exists because darkness erases your safety margin, and keep those three definitions of "night" straight. Do that, and night flying becomes what it should be: one of the best experiences in all of aviation, flown by a pilot who knows exactly why the airplane is legal and safe to be up there.
