FAQs

What do the colors mean?

Each copy of the Pre-Tabbed FAR/AIM will contain a helpful guide to the colors, their meanings and special tab types. This color guide will be attached to the inside cover of your pre-tabbed FAR/AIM. Generally, each color is tied to a license/rating type (blue for private, red for instrument etc.).

What is tabbed out?

Each of our tabs are created from ASA’s own suggested study list (found in the FAR/AIM itself). Not every single regulation found on the list is tabbed out (in order to prevent overcrowding the book with tabs). Instead, the most important and commonly focused-on regulations have been tabbed. It should also be noted that single tabs can actually cover several different regulations by grouping them under a single header. So even if a book contains 50 tabs, that doesn't mean only 50 regulations are tabbed out. Tabs focus mainly on parts 61 and 91.

How many tabs are in each version?

Private Pilot - 50 Tabs

Instrument Pilot - 50 Tabs

Commercial Pilot - 50 Tabs

Private + Instrument Combo - 75 Tabs

Private + Instrument + Commercial Combo - 75 Tabs

CFI - 75 Tabs

CFI + Instrument Instructor - 100 Tabs

Please note that wherever possible, we try to prevent overcrowding pages with tabs by placing multiple regulations on a single tab. Therefore, one tab does not always equal one regulation. One tab in many cases contains several regulations.

How are the FAR/AIMs packaged for shipping?

Northstar Aviation uses a combination of shaped foam and clamshell boxes to protect both the book and tabs as best as possible in transit. We recommend you keep the box for future transportation of your book!

Do the FAR/AIMs contain Parts 135 and 121?

No, ASA FAR/AIMs do not containt parts 121 and 135.

Pre-tabbed Far/Aim

It's a wonderful tool. I used to get frustrated because I didn't know where to start looking for information. When you're going through your aviation career, you can only remember so much because your brain is packed full of new information. By purchasing this, it takes a little bit off of my plate. Obviously, you still have to learn all the information but it makes it so much easier to find. Great idea, I wish I would have thought of it 😁.

Tabs Lessen stress for student pilot

As a student pilot, navigating the FAR/AIM can feel like a daunting task, to say the least. The sheer volume of information and regulations can be overwhelming at times, and it’s easy to get lost in the details. That’s why having it tabbed out has been such a game changer for me. It saves a significant amount of time, allowing me to focus on learning rather than getting bogged down in organization.

Not only does it streamline my study sessions, but it also makes it much easier to find the specific information I need quickly. Plus, the small cost of tabbing it out compared to the standard books is well worth it. There's simply nothing that compares to holding a physical book in my hands rather than just relying on an iPad. The tactile experience of flipping through the pages enhances my learning process and makes it feel more engaging.

Another advantage is that I can actually read the tabs, which is a relief considering my less-than-stellar handwriting. This small adjustment has made a big difference in my ability to study effectively and retain important information, ultimately helping me become a more confident and knowledgeable pilot.
